Ser y Estar

Sixth graders have been working on understanding the difference between the verbs SER and ESTAR in Spanish. Both verbs mean, "to be" and they can be tricky to use correctly when speaking and writing. Using storytelling to introduce the difference between the two in context made it easier for students. Students also looked at photographs and described what the person was doing, where they were located, what they looked like and where they were from. By describing the photos, students were  learning how to use the proper forms of both verbs. Currently, students are working on a project to demonstrate their mastery of SER and ESTAR. Stay tuned!

Great Artists - Day 2

Today, we had the fabulous opportunity to learn from a local street mural artist, Jason Gould. He owns his own studio and art supplies store right here in San Diego (www.visualshopsd.com). He showed us some fantastic stenciling techniques (similar to famous street mural artists like Banksy) using different nozzle tips and gave pointers on how to best free hand using spray paint. Check out some of our practice pieces below!

Museum of Man Field Trip

To wrap up the Egypt unit in Humanities, the sixth graders took a trip to the Museum of Man in Balboa Park. We got to explore not only a fabulous Egpyt exhibit, but also one on the history of man. That's an Egyptian wrap! :)

Pi Day - 3.14

In honor of every mathematicians favorite day, at 1:59pm today (date: 3.14 time:159) the NMY celebrated pi day by having each student memorize and then recite as many digits of pi as they could. As added incentive, any NMY student that memorized more than 100 digits was given an opportunity to "pi" Justin in the face with a whip cream pie. Our top NMY performers were:
Alisar (6th) - 119
Kendra (7th) - 114
Ryan (6th) - 111
Emma (8th) - 41
Collin (6th) - 41

Great Artists - Day 1

Today we spent our first full day diving into our Great Artist study of street mural art! We learned how Banksy and other street muralists use almost entirely stencils to create their works of art. Laure helped us out in learning how to create stencils that can overlap and create dimension through shading and use of multiple colors. Check out our progress!

Underneath the Surface - Freshwater Ecosystems

After studying the different types of biomes, we've recently been looking at ecosystems and the biotic (living) and abiotic (no living) factors that make it up. Specifically in freshwater ecosystems, we can see how these different factors change and work together to make a thriving ecosystem work! Over the next few weeks, we'll be adding in different biotic facors (plants, fish, snails, etc) and seeing how different abiotic factors we measure change as a result. Some of the abiotic factors we're measuring in our ecosystems are temperature, dissolved oxygen, nitrate, conductivity and pH. This week we added our plants! Can you take a guess which abiotic factor increased significantly as a result??
